Leinster semi final on a Saturday evening

(Oldest Posts First)

I see the Louth/Wicklow/Meath v Laois/Longford/Kildare Leinster semi final is down for a Saturday evening at 7 oclock . delighted that they have stopped playing these semi finals as a double header with the Dublin game. the atmosphere in croker the last few years has been terrible, even last year when meath v Dublin the atmosphere was like a morgue. terrible stuff. hopefully the GAA keep these games separate from now on. tis game should be played in nowlan park or portllaoise . imagine meath v Kildare in a packed portlaise opn a wrm evening. compared to croke park. 20,000 in portlaise would be a huge crowd , 20,000 in croker is a funeral home! meath v Kildare will bring between 20-30,000 as a stand alone fixture would portlaise hold this? anyway should be great to have a game without the dubs in the place. I think most leinster counties are fed up looking at Dublin and their fans without them being there when you don't have to play them!

Might be jumping the gun by calling it a Kildare Meath Semi final. Sure other counties will have a bit to say on that. But otherwise agree wholeheartedly with your sentiment. Laois Kildare in Tullamore in the 2009 Leinster Semi final was a great occasion on a sunny evening. Tullamore would be most obvious venue for any potential pairing rather that Portlaoise or Kilkenny.

Its down to be in Croke Park according to this website. If true we're heading back to the morgue.

Nice to see that you'll be heading to the game to support your Wee neighbours ;)

Ridiculous if so, but doesn't surprise me, Leinster Council have made a fine art out of messing up fixtures. No semi final should be a stand alone fixture in Croker, given the way things are in Leinster even the Dubs are struggling to put a decent crowd in the place, plenty of fine and suitable venues about the province to play semi finals, well beyond time that we saw more games outside Croke Park

Louth v Laois always makes for a good game.

It appears the only reason it is in CP is to justify the huge cost of maintenance of the facility.

sorry it should read. louth/wicklow/meath vs kildare/laois/longford. anyway that dosent matter, the point is that croker will be 3/4 empty. these players dont care about playing in croker there all in it before plenty of times. the fans dont care about going to it either its no novelty. louth v laois would be some game though. anyone remember 1991? the biggest row ever seen in croke park. 1992 they played a good game too. why do they hate each other so much? they dont border? is it a culture clash or something? id love meath v kildare in portlaise , its a very lucky pitch for meath. probarly luckier than navan

Dickie Louth and Laois don't hate each other? What are you smoking? In the early 90's they did meet four times. In 1991 they was a draw match in the semi-final of the Leinster Championship. In the replay as you stated there was that massive brawl and Laois won that match by eight points. A year later in 1992 Louth got their revenge by beating Laois by a point in the quarter-finals in the Leinster Championship match. In 1993 Laois knocked out Louth in the first round of the Leinster Championship.

Sky Saturday evening, so stand alone fixture, not been funny but at least with double heading you get value for money, will tickets be same price? I have distant Cavan gene

Add an extra fiver minimum onto the double header ticket and combine it with the fact that it's going to be Dublin horsing someone then it's not really much more value for money is it?

The more games in the likes of Tullamore or Portlaoise the better really.

Sure wait till Navan's redeveloped and you're giving out about double headers in Croke Park instead of stand alone games there :)

Sky seem to have a liking for the Leinster Championship, more games then any other province.

With the Ulster one being the best, thats odd.

BBC will be showing most Ulster games anyways, with RTE showing less Leinster games (than BBC show Ulster ones) it leaves Sky with more room for exclusive coverage which is probably what they'd prefer.

If Portlaoise was upgraded properly, it would be an ideal location for games too small for Croke Park but too big for the likes of Kilkenny/Tullamore.
(never understood why they didn't put terracing in Tullamore, it would be a nice ground if they had, it just looks unfinished as it is)

Munster has too many 40k plus white elephant stadiums, but Leinster could do with one outside Dublin.

Well Meath will be getting a bigger stadium soon.

Will it be around 20,000? Ideal for the league and for some earlier championship games alright but probably too small for the bigger championship games?

Still though a 20,000 modern stadium makes sense for the most part. Better atmosphere and a ground that can cater for most of a county's championship games.
