Na Fianna camogs secure senior status

16 July 2012

Meath and Na Fianna star Claire Coffey
Meath Senior Camogie Championship match report.

Na Fianna 3-12
Navan O'Mahonys 0-5

Na Fianna needed this win to ensure senior status for 2013 and they set their sights on winning this Championship encounter. Given all the rain showers in July so far, both teams were lucky that the rain stayed away for the evening. Navan O'Mahonys was the first to register a score with a free from Margaret Stevens. Both teams were level pegging in the opening 5 mins of the game and it looked as if this would be a tough contest. NaFianna scored their first point which was brilliant team work as Claire Coffey gave a sweet pass to Claire Flynn and she popped it over the bar. NaFianna's Niamh Kirby converted the next 3 frees. These frees were a result of serious pressure being put on the oppositions' backs by NaFianna forwards, Orla Vessey, Elizabeth Flynn & Co. The mid field pairing of Claire Coffey & Andrea Colgan allowed limited ball pass the midfield line and when it did the half backs of Mary Grogan, Annette Parks & Therese Cosgrave were there to control the situation. Again, another great link up between Claire Coffey & Claire Flynn saw Claire Flynn tap the ball in the back of the net. Niamh Kirby scored her 4th Free for NaFianna which left NaFianna with 1-5 on the scoreboard. Navan O'Mahony's goalkeeper Ellen Duignan pulled off a fine save from a shot on goal by Niamh Kirby. Claire Flynn was in possession and spotted Niamh Kirby just outside the square. Niamh Kirby made it 1-6 to 0-1 with three minutes left in the opening period with another free after a foul on NaFianna forward Shauna Ennis.

Half time score NaFianna 1-6 Navan O'Mahonys 0-1.

Navan O'Mahonys started the second half with the intention to get more scores on the board. They worked hard but with NaFianna goalkeeper Mary Reilly on alert & full back line of Claire Reynolds, Lorraine Boggan & Caroline Murphy proving too strong, it made it a difficult task for Navan O'Mahonys. The NaFianna forwards worked hard to set Claire Flynn up for her 2nd goal in the game. A sideline by Claire Coffey saw her target Claire Flynn which resulted in another goal by Claire Flynn. This brought Claire Flynn's tally to 3-1. Navan O'Mahonys Maria Flynn & Caoimhe McDermott worked the ball back up the pitch to register their 2nd & 3rd points. In fairness to Navan O'Mahonys, the score line doesn't justify the game. They gave nothing too easy to NaFianna and at this stage NaFianna were under pressure but they managed to get the ball out of their backs and down the pitch to their forward line which saw Catherine Neary score a super point not far from the 45. This brought NaFianna's score to 3-8. In the 40th minute, Kelly Martin came on for Niamh Kirby and continuously put pressure on Navan O'Mahonys. Catherine Neary, Shauna Ennis & Claire Coffey linked up together to set Claire Flynn up for another point. In the 43rd minute, Aisling Coffey came on for Claire Flynn and linked up well with NaFianna forwards to get more scores. Shauna Ennis took over the duties of free taking and scored 2 points from placed balls. In the 50th minute, Siobhan Kirby came on for Elizabeth Flynn and was unlucky not to put the ball in the back of the net. A great pass by Orla Vessey to Shauna Ennis saw Shauna Ennis pop the ball over the black spot. Navan O'Mahonys full back Mollie Duignan pumped the ball up the pitch which allowed their forwards register another 2 consecutive points from play. At this stage it was too great a mountain for Navan O'Mahonys to climb but they kept pressure on NaFianna and worked hard to the final whistle. NaFianna were awarded a 45 after Navan O'Mahonys goalkeeper brought off another excellent save. Claire Coffey stepped up to the duty and hit the ball over the black spot
