Henry Shefflin and Charlie Carter were part of the same Kilkenny full forward line (along with DJ Carey) that won an All-Ireland in 2000, but this afternoon in Nowlan Park they'll be in opposite dugouts when Ballyhale Shamrocks and St Martin's face off for a place in the Leinster club SHC final.

Shefflin is in his second season as Ballyhale manager and seeking to win back-to-back All-Ireland club titles, while this is Carter's fourth season to be involved with Wexford champions St Martin's.

"Ah sure, we're facing a massive challenge," the St Martin's coach / selector told The Herald.

"I think everyone knows that. Shamrocks are a very formidable outfit. Might even be a bit better from last year - their younger lads are a bit more experienced. They have marquee players all over the field."

A three-time All Star, Carter wasn't in the least bit surprised to see Shefflin go into management after hanging up his hurl.

"He's a driven character. He was always going to go into management, I'd say," he said of his former team-mate.

"Look, I didn't know the circumstances; I thought maybe he might take a year or two out after finishing up with Kilkenny. But maybe that's just the way the balls fell, and he took the bull by the horns. He probably knew what he had to work with as well."
