Paul Murphy argues that inter-county teams don't need a large backroom staff to be successful.

Kilkenny manager Brian Cody's backroom team comprised just 11 people this year, which is small compared to other counties competing for All-Ireland honours.

“Sometimes keeping it simple works for certain players or teams,” the All Star corner back told the Irish Times at the launch for the New York Hurling Classic in Dublin Airport recently.

“Often the less that’s said the better. You can get a lot of work done with three [management] lads rather than 30 lads. That’s not to say what Limerick or anyone are doing is wrong. It’s what Brian feels and it’s what the players are extremely happy with."

The army man, who departs for a six-month tour of duty in Lebanon this weekend, welcomes the addition of DJ Carey and Martin Comerford to a Kilkenny management set-up that already features Brian Cody and James McGarry.

“We have three lads who have won All-Irelands and DJ Carey, one of the greatest players of all time. The players look at that and go, ‘If he’s telling me what to do, it’s surely the best advice I can get anywhere’,” he added.
