Armagh GAA have released a statement this evening confirming that they’d received permission from the CCCC for their senior football team to train in Portugal this week.

Reports emerged today that Kieran McGeeney’s squad had departed for the Algarve on Tuesday for their warm-weather training camp ahead of their Ulster championship clash with Down on May 29th.

Normally, the camp would breach Rule 6.22 of the GAA’s Official Guide, which states: “senior inter-county panels shall not be permitted to go on training weekends, or training of longer duration, after the final of their respective National League having been played, except during the 10 days period prior to a senior championship game, or during the 17 days prior to an All-Ireland senior final”.

However, in a statement released by the county board, chairman Michael Savage explained that permission for the squad to collectively train was granted by the CCCC with no club games fixed in the Orchard County this Bank Holiday weekend.

"Let me be very clear and set the record straight on recent media reports regarding our senior county football team. In advance of any plans we contacted GAA Headquarters to seek permission for our senior county players to collectively train and this was subsequently granted by the CCCC,” said Mr Savage.

"In relation to comments surrounding our club fixtures over the Easter break, it has always been the case during our fixture planning that this time is kept free, if our competitions have already commenced.

"We are fully supportive of our county senior players and management as they now prepare for the forthcoming championship.”
