Clare forward Keelan Sexton believes that there is good competition for places in the squad this year.

Sexton feels that every player that has saw game time this year has put in a genuine shout for a starting place in next weekend’s league opener.

Last weekend’s McGrath Cup final win over Cork was the perfect boost for the Banner as they head into the National League campaign.

And Sexton told the Clare Champion that preparations for the start of the league could not have gone much better as the squad has worked hard.

“Everyone’s aim is to make sure the management know you’re working to be involved and if you’re not, then you shouldn’t be here,” said Sexton.

“There’s a quality panel there, with plenty of young lads and more lads coming back from injury and travelling, so it’s building nicely and there’s a really good atmosphere in training.

“The main thing is for everyone to keep fit and keep pushing the man beside you for the jersey. That can only benefit the whole squad, as we look forward to the year.

“Our first big game this year is against an All-Ireland contender in Donegal and they’ve been one of the top sides of the last few years. That’s where you want to test yourself and that’s where we want to be.”
