Limerick captain Declan Hannon has revealed the pain he went through after his county’s 2013 All-Ireland SHC semi-final defeat to Clare.

Hannon missed four frees before being taken off the Shannonsiders’ frees against the Banner men whom won the game by 1-22 to 0-18 before going on to claim victory in a final replay against Cork.

Hannon, who became the first Limerick man in 45 years to lift the Liam MacCarthy Cup in August, described it as “probably the worst experience I had in a Limerick jersey” and revealed that the “flak” he received afterwards stuck with him for a while.

“If people are going through a lot of things the best thing to do is have a chat with your friend or something, get it off your chest. You'll feel a lot better about it. I would just talk about it," he is quoted saying by the Irish Independent.

"I didn't talk to anybody about it, didn't want to see anyone, didn't even want to go down to the club training because I thought they were talking about it. I was just embarrassed. I should have just talked about it."

He added: “It made this year a lot sweeter to come full circle and go through that massively low point and eventually come out the right side. You just have to keep going, these things happen in sport and in life, people get knocked down but there's no point in giving in."
