Mike Casey a worthy successor to Pat Hartigan

August 21, 2018

Limerick's Kevin Downes, Mike Casey, William O'Donoghue, Shane Dowling, David Dempsey and Peter Casey all from Na Piarsaigh GAA celebrate with the Liam McCarthy Cup

Five-times All Star full back Pat Hartigan must have been impressed by the magnificence of the Treaty County's last line of defence in Sunday's All-Ireland final.

As John Kiely's charges dethroned Galway to claim the Liam MacCarthy Cup for the first time in 45 years, Na Piarsaigh clubman Mike Casey was phenomenal in the No.3 shirt before being forced out of the action through injury. His replacement Richie McCarthy was also outstanding, while corner backs Sean Finn and Richie English also stood out in a rock-solid line that will surely gain All Star recognition later in the year.

The full-back line is one where the Shannonsiders have an envious track record of All Star success. South Liberties legend Hartigan, an All-Ireland winner with his county in 1973 (and a county U21 for six years!), was full back on the very first All Star selection in 1971 and was named for five successive years, making the jersey his own.

Another Limerick man, Leonard Enright, collected three full back All Star awards in 1980, '81 and '83, while the aforementioned McCarthy and Seamus Hickey were the last two Treaty County players to receive All Stars, selected at corner back in 2013 and 2014 respectively.

Is Casey about to follow in their footsteps?
