Leitrim will have a new senior football boss in 2019 following the news that Brendan Guckian has stepped down.

Guckian was appointed manager of his native county on a two year-term which came to an end last month when the Connacht side were defeated by Monaghan in Round Four of the All-Ireland SFC Qualifiers.

The St Mary's clubman revealed to the Leitrim Observer today that he is not allowing his name go forward for a second-term after he was told by the county board that he would have to reapply for the position.

Guckian had already begun plans for next year, seeking out a new trainer was a top priority after Michael Moyles' decision to depart the role this week.

The Carrick-on-Shannon native also had All-Ireland winning manager John O'Mahony and former player Seamus Quinn as part of his backroom team.
