Turlough O'Brien hit back at Joe Brolly's criticism of Carlow's style of play after their season was ended by Tyrone on Saturday.

The Barrowsiders secured promotion from Division 4 of the Allianz League in the spring before registering championship wins over both Louth and Kildare in what will go down as one of their most successful seasons in many years. However, O'Brien has taken issue with the RTE pundit's claims that Carlow are a negative team and insists they try to play attractive football.

"Some people seem to think that Carlow play a defensive style of football," the Carlow manager said.

"But some of these critics and pundits and ex-players - let's be honest about it - Joe Brolly has had a right pop at Carlow in the last few weeks. There's a lot of holes in Brolly's arguments and a Brolly with holes in it isn't much use.

"He's talking about Carlow being a defensive team but look at some of the scores we got in the National Football League.

"We were one of the top-scoring teams in the National League and one of the top goalscoring teams in the National League. So I think those facts stand up against argument about how we play the game."

O'Brien also confirmed that he will be staying on as Carlow boss for another year.
