St. Martin's opened the defence of their Wexford SHC title with a 2-20 to 2-16 victory over local rivals St. Anne's at the weekend.

A brace of first half goals from Jake Firman and a 14-point haul from Rory O'Connor paved the way for the win over last year's intermediate champions. Jack O'Connor also impressed for the county champions who repelled goals in either half from Mikie Fogarty and Diarmuid O'Keeffe (penalty) for St. Anne's.

Last year's runners-up Oulart-the-Ballagh needed a late Rory Jacob point to earn a 1-18 apiece draw with Glynn-Barntown, while Eoghan Nolan bagged an early hat-trick to help Shelmaliers to a 4-21 to 1-16 victory over Lee Chin's Faythe Harriers.

Meanwhile, Seamus Casey scored 1-7 in Oylegate-Glenbrien's 2-11 to 1-9 win over Ferns, while Tomas Mahon scored 2-7 for Rapparees in their 2-17 to 3-10 defeat of Buffer's Alley.
