New Tyrone under-20 trainer Dermot Carlin is looking forward to his new role.

Having won two All-Ireland SFC medals with the Red Hand County, the Killyclogher clubman was forced to retire from inter-county action due to a persistent back injury.

Carlin will continue to line out for his club, but he admitted to the Ulster Herald that he is excited by the new role for the inaugural under-20 football championship as he links up with manager Paul Devlin and selector Paddy McGuigan.

"I can't wait to get at it. It's something I always wanted to do. It's great working with the lads and I'm back up at Garvaghey, I didn't think it'd be so soon," said Carlin.

"I'm still playing myself, and still intending on playing as long as the injury settles down okay. I'd been involved with youth teams helping out, I'd never actually managed one but I'd always been there to help out at all the different stages."
