Lester Ryan will captain the Kilkenny hurlers this year.

The 26-year-old, who established himself in the Kilkenny midfield last year, has been nominated by county champions Clara to succeed Colin Fennelly in the role. Ryan was a key figure in Clara's surprise SHC success last October, which came just eight months after they were crowned All-Ireland club IHC winners in Croke Park.

Ryan was always favourite to take over the captaincy for 2014 as the other two Clara players currently in Brian Cody's squad - David Langton and Shane Prendergast - have limited inter-county experience. Tweet
