Carroll, George

The Late George Carroll The sudden death of George Carroll shocked not alone Wicklow town but football lovers all over the county. George was one of a new generation of talented players who ushered in a most exciting era for Wicklow town in the early 1950s. That team brought eight SFC titles to the county town while many of them, including George played on the Wicklow county team as well. George had two outstanding moments in along career. The first came in 1957 when he played on the Wicklow team that won the O'Byrne Cup- beating Kildare in the final at Blessington. The second was in 1961 when he captained St. Patrick's to a great three-in-a-row in the SFC. George was presented with the Miley Cup and like all three-in-a-row winners was allowed to keep the cup. George's son Mathew was also a prominent footballer with St. Pat's in the 80's and played for Wicklow in many grades. To his wife Veronica, his family, brothers and sisters we extend our sympathy.
