Keogh, Mary

The Late Mary Keogh The Gaels of Wicklow and the entire community of Kitegan joined with County Board President and GAA columnist Peter Keogh in mourning the death of his wife Mary. Mary Keogh was a very a very quiet and gentle soul whose life revolved around her family and she took great pride in the achievements and successes of her two daughters Breda and Josephine, and her devoted husband Peter. In latter years Mary had not enjoyed the best of health and she died in the early hours of Tuesday in Baltinglass hospital, surrounded by her loving and caring family. A native of Carrigaline in Co. Cork she met Peter Keogh some 64 years ago after she came to work for the Kiltegan Fathers, and they were married in 1950. From there on her family was the centre of her life, and she was very supportive of her husband Peter in all facts of his work, taking a special pride in his work as an administrator in the GAA in Wicklow at the highest levels and as a GAA columnist for the Wicklow People. Peter Keogh is a man with a great passion for the GAA and his writings and reports on matches and GAA affairs have won much acclaim throughout the county and beyond. Peter's wife Mary was his greatest supporter in this work as a scribe, even though it meant he was off every Sunday covering matches and most week evenings too. Mary was a very private, family person and in later years her seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren were the apple of her eye. She was the last surviving member of her own family in Cork, but is sadly missed by her nieces and nephews. Children from Talbotstown National School provided the guard of honour as her remains were brought to the local Church where they were received by curate Fr. Joe Brophy who paid tribute to Mary and Peter Keogh on their long life of love, caring and sharing together. Talbotstown Church was thronged with mourners for her funeral, including Gaels from adjoining counties, reflecting the genuine esteem and affection in which Mary and Peter Keogh and family are held in the community and beyond. Meanwhile, all GAA matches in the county that were scheduled were called off as a mark of respect. Deepest sympathy is extended to husband Peter Keogh and daughters Breda and Josephine, grandchildren and great grand children on their huge loss. Burial took place after Requiem Mass.
