Murphy, Paddy

April 30, 2004
The Late Paddy Murphy THE death of Paddy Murphy of Lugduff, Tinahely in Naas Hospital caused wide spread shock and sorrow in the GAA Community in Wicklow. Paddy was one of the grand old gentlemen of the GAA and an outstanding worker at club and county level. He had the distinction of serving at different times in all three top positions within the club - chairman, secretary and treasurer. His greatest work at club level was with the Juveniles and he was lucky enough to see young players that he helped to nurture develop into one of the great teams in the county. His proudest moment was when they won the Miley Cup in 1984. They went on to become the first Wicklow team to contest a Leinster Senior Club final. Paddy served in many positions on the County Board - notably Registrar and Development Officer. He served under five different Chairmen and held positions at Leinster level as well as representing the County at the Annual Congress of the GAA on a number of occasions. He was particularly proud of the development work carried out on the County Grounds at Aughrim during his time as Development Officer. When the first Ladies Football board was formed in 1988 he was its first President. People from all parts of the county attended the funeral to Kilavaney Church on Sunday night and burial in the adjoining cemetery on Monday. Former GAA President Jack Bootman and all the top officers of the County Board were present. Players, past and present and officers of the County Board and the Tinahely club formed a guard of honour and marched with the cortege from St Kevins GAA Park to the church on Sunday evening. Jimmy Dunne, close friend and former colleague gave a moving oration at the grave side and paid a worm tribute to a great GAA worker. Our sympathy to his sisters, nephews and all his bereaved family. May he rest in peace. Courtesy of the Wicklow People, April 2004.
