Double Tragedy Rocks Communities; Shock at loss of truck driver Dan

Communities in South Wicklow and North Wexford have been plunged into grief following the tragic death of truck driver Dan Murphy in a road accident on Monday. Mr. Murphy (63) was a resident of Castletown and had many friends and colleagues in Arklow where he worked for close to three decades. Born to Maurice and Nancy Murphy and a native of Tara Hill, Mr. Murphy was one of ten children.

He lived in Castletown with his wife Helen where they raised a family of their own. Mr. Murphy worked in Roadstone, Arklow until he purchased his own vehicle in recent years. He had been working on Monday when his truck collided with a ditch on the N11 at Scratnagh near Jack Whites. Mr. Murphy was pronounced dead at the scene and Garda forensic collision investigators carried out examinations while traffic was diverted. News of his death was received with sock and sadness on Monday evening and tributes that flooded in were testament to his popularity in the community.

Mr. Murphy was an extremely active member of the Castletown/Tara Hill community and had been involved with the local Castletown Liam Mellows GAA club for a number of years, including serving a stint as the club's secretary. 'Dan was a laid-back and well-liked man who really enjoyed his football and hurling. Only yesterday (Sunday) he was sitting in Wexford Park with his daughter and grandchildren cheering on Castletown in the county final. He had a friendly word for everyone and he will be sadly missed in the community here in Castletown,' said Club chairman Michael Halpin. The Murphy family wishes to extend thanks to the emergency services especially Joe Sullivan, Sean O'Leary and good friends Edmund Hyland and Danny Whelan. Mr. Murphy is survived by wife Helen, sons Donal and Ciaran and daughters Deirdre, Aideen, Grainne, Niamh and Elaine, extended family and friends. May he rest in peace.
