Football legend Willie Cuffe is laid to rest

One of Wicklow's greatest football legends was laid to rest on Saturday with a large crowd gathered to pass on their final farewells.

William (Willie) Cuffe of Castle View, Seafront, Wicklow town was the mighty midfielder of the St. Patrick's team who dominated football in the county in the 50's and 60's. He was also a prominent member of the Wicklow team at the time. Regarded as one of the best ball carriers in the game, Willie destroyed many bigger named players throughout Ireland.

His funeral mass was held in St. Patrick's Church, Wicklow town, followed by interment in Rathnew cemetery.

Willie passed away in St. Colman's Hospital, Rathdrum.

He is the son of the late Maurice and Catherine Cuffe and brother of the late Essie, May, Julie and Richard. He will be sadly missed by his loving brothers Sean and Maurice, sisters Anna May Gill, Hannah Ferguson, Patricia Colohan, Elizabeth Kinsella and Sarah Cuffe, extended family and friends.
