UK transfers reached 266 in three months

GAA players are leaving Ireland in their droves.

The number of players transferred from clubs at home to the UK reached 266 in the first three months of the year.

The startling figure was revealed when the Irish Post carried out a survey covering the amount of players signing up for clubs in the UK.

The three month period was the busiest in recent years and it is a 13% increase on the same period last year.

Britain Provincial Council PRO Sean Hackett told the Irish Post that he was not surprised by the numbers shown.

"The figures mirror our expectations," said Hackett. "We haven't gathered statistics yet in terms of what percentage of Irish emigrants to Britain are registering with clubs here.

"The difficulty is that the cream of the crop players are being held on to by their clubs in Ireland, so quite a lot of them hop on a plane and go back home to play."
