Harney, Thomas

July 01, 2009
Dunlavin came to a standstill on Wednesday morning as the local community came out in their droves to pay respect to the sadly departed Thomas Harney. The high esteem with which he was held locally was evident by the large turnout in St. Nicholas of Myra Church. His beloved Dunlavin club also lined out for a guard of honour as Mr. Harney's remains were brought to Dunlavin Cemetery for burial. County Wicklow GAA circles were also well represented. Mr Harney died suddenly the previous Sunday while attending a Dunlavin versus Annacurra match at Baltinglass in the afternoon. He had a life-long association with Dunlavin GAA club. As well as loyally supporting the club and watching matches whenever possible, he also managed at different levels, from underage level right up to the first team. He was also an active raiser of funds on behalf of the club as well. Even while living over in the UK for a period, Dunlavin was never far from Mr Harney's heart and it was no surprise when he returned to west Wicklow. He was married to Bridget, and the father of daughters Helen, Anne and Vanessa and sons Thomas and Ian. He will also be missed by his daughter-in-law, sons-in-law, grand-children, sisters, brothers, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, god-children, relatives and friends and the wider community as a whole. - Wicklow People, 1st July 2009
