Goals in either half were central to Carlow’s 2-5 to 0-8 round 1 win over neighbours Wicklow at Netwatch Cullen Park today.

A mix-up in the Wicklow defence resulted in Daniel St Ledger’s opening goal via a 45 in the 12th minute and when the half-time whistle was sounded the Barrowsiders were 1-4 to 0-3 ahead on the scoreboard.

Unanswered points from Dan Keane, Chris O’Brien (free) and ‘keeper Mark Jackson (free) reduced the deficit to the minimum early in the second-half but Davy Burke’s team suffered a set-back when Robbie Kane netted the Barrowsiders’ second goal.

They subsequently lost Conor Healy to the sin-bin for 10 minutes while they finished the game with 14 men after Dean Healy picked up a second yellow card.

A trip to Longford beckons for Carlow next Saturday while Wicklow will play host to their new manager’s native Kildare in Aughrim.
