The Wicklow senior football championship clash between Rathnew and Hollywood was overshadowed by alleged racist abuse suffered by one of the players.

Rathnew’s JT Hayden is alleged to have been racially abused during the game and his club have stressed that they want something done about the matter.

The incident took place towards the end of the game in Aughrim and it is alleged that the Rathnew centre back was verbally abused along the sideline.

Rathnew are awaiting the referee’s report before deciding what course of action they will take, while county board chairman Martin Fitzgerald told the Wicklow People that they could not comment until they had received the referee’s report.

Fitzgerald said: “Wicklow GAA would certainly condemn any behaviour along those lines but we will have to await the referee’s report before we can take action.”
