Wicklow's Patrick O'Connor believes a two-tier football championship is the only way forward.

The Garden County recorded a surprise victory over Offaly in the first round of last year's Leinster SFC before being handed a heavy defeat by All-Ireland champions Dublin in the quarter-final.

“I would be all for the two-tier championship," the Blessington clubman said at the launch of the Renault GAA World Games in Croke Park yesterday.

“There’s the likes of Dublin and Kerry who are streets ahead of everyone else. How do you compete with them? Let’s be honest, Wicklow can’t really put it up to Dublin.

“If you knew at the start of the year that there was a two-tier championship, something that you could look at and realistically feel that you had a genuine chance of winning, it would definitely be more of a motivator.”

“It might also bring in more lads that haven’t been on the county team that are capable of being involved. I’d be all for it."
