Former Wexford All-Ireland winner Garry Laffan has been nominated as a Fianna Fail candidate for the local elections.

Laffan, who was part of the Wexford side that won the All-Ireland SHC title in 1996, has been nominated for the party and he has received the backing of his predecessor and Wexford Mayor Tony Dempsey.

In recent times, Laffan has guided Wicklow side Glenealy to back to back county senior titles, while his name was also linked with the Garden County senior hurling manager’s job.

However, he admitted to the Wexford People that it was a great honour to be nominated but added that there was a long way to go before he may be elected.

“I’m very honoured to be nominated but this is only the starting point,” said Laffan. “We’ve to wait for the selection convention now, to see what way the party approaches the election.”
