Wicklow Central Council delegate Martin Coleman says there is support amongst players to introduce a Tier 2 football championship.

Following a number of ones-sided qualifier game in this year’s All-Ireland SFC, Central Council agreed in principle last month to take on board the possibility of a second tier championship, inviting counties to make submissions.

"I have spoken to some players in Wicklow and they are largely supportive,” Coleman is quoted saying by the Irish Independent.

“The important thing is that this in no way cuts across the provincial championships. That was vital.

"Every county plays there as before, which is what they all want. The change only comes in once a Division 3 or 4 team are beaten in their province without reaching the final.”

He added that proper recoginition and marketing would see it work: "Nobody will buy into it otherwise. But if it's well-organised and marketed and if the semi-finals and final are on the same days as the All-Ireland games, we believe it would work well. The time is right to try it. That way, we will find out if it works.”
