St Patricks club notes

November 20, 2017

Congratulations to our U16 girls and all involved in retaining the Division 1 league title against AGB in Pearse  Park Arklow. Both teams started the game level on points. Unfortunately the underfoot conditions did not allow for a free flowing match.  But not for the first time the two teams served up an entertaining, nail biting hour of football.  AGB brimming with confidence from winning the championship started off the brighter and went two points up and should have extended their lead before Pats registered their first score a point around the tenth minute. It was another fifteen minutes when a scrambled goal through the persistence of Sophia Porter and Ciara Fagan left Pats trailing by two as Arklow netted prior. Luci Hobbs picked up a pass and drove towards goal to blast high into the roof of the net as St Pats took the lead for the first time just before the break. The second half ebbed and flowed until the seventh minute when Arklow took the lead with a well taken goal. It was Niamh Caffrey's turn to get on the score sheet when she struck her first point five minutes later.  Both defences were so on top and on the twenty second minute AGB shot to go four points up with just eight minutes remaining. Pats drove forward from the kick out and won a free left of centre twenty five meters out.  Niamh Caffrey stepped up and rattled the top corner to leave just one point it. County star Sinead McGettigan equalized with a free from thirty meters. Pats pushed up on the kick out and retained possession, with some neat interlink play which eventually found McGettigan who struck a shot to top right hand corner of the net, what was to be the winning score. There was so many great performances especially  from the back line  marshalled by Kellie Phelan,  Siobhan Gorman,  Lucy Dunne and  Sarah Evans who worked tirelessly  all afternoon , and were supported by two of our youngest players Chloe O'Donovan and Eva Phelan who came in for the injured Aoife Dunne and Amy Kavanagh. Not to mention our goalkeeper Ellen Griffin who has been excellent all year. Zoe Armstrong added stability to the defence when she came on, after weeks on the side-lines through an ankle injury. Naoise O'Reilly worked tirelessly in midfield and up forward. Aine Kavanagh, Amy Kavanagh and Hannah Whelan came off the bench and played vital roles. The cup was presented to Niamh McSorley who played a captains role as she linked between midfield and the full forward line.  We would like to wish Emer McNulty a speedy recovery as she went off with a foot injury after 15 mins and also Arklow's Aine O Reilly who got injured just before that.
