The Late Seán D. Moore The Fianna Fail T.D., Tony Dempsey paid a warm tribute at the funeral Mass of the late Seán D. Moore in Barntown Church last Friday morning. Mr. Moore passed away early on Wednesday at his residence in Colestown, Wexford after a long illness. He was aged 79 years. Deputy Dempsey described the deceased as a remarkable and said he was privileged to have him as a close friend for many years. Apart from his devotion to his beloved wife, Marion and his five sons and family. Seán was passionate about the Fianna Fail party, the GAA and the game of hurling in particular. He was a member of the local Fianna Fail cumann for over 60 years, during which time he served in all officer positions. He was known as a tireless worker for his local area and as a great man who got things done in a quiet but efficient manner. In his youth, Seán played juvenile and minor hurling with Glynn/Barntown GAA Club. He had a fantastic memory and could recall the exact scores from hurling and football matches as far back as the mid-1930's. When petrol was rationed during the war, Seán along with his brother Seamus and friends, regularly cycled to GAA matches all over Leinster. On one occasion, they rode bicycles to Portlaoise and back which took two days. He was particularly proud of all his 14 grandchildren and he often attended underage hurling matches involved three of his grandsons, Eoin, Colm and Gary. The last time he attended Wexford Park was on July 26 to watch Colm who was a member of the Glynn/Barntown under 14 hurling team that won the Roinn 2 county final. Seán also enjoyed the sport of greyhound racing. He was a regular attender at Enniscorthy and Waterford greyhound tracks. He enjoyed the odd small bet and would often be seen enthusiastically cheering home dogs owned or trained by his son, Eamonn. A minute's silence was observed as a mark of respect at Enniscorthy greyhound track on Thursday night last. Seán worked for over 40 years for Irish Life Assurance Company. He worked initially in the District Office, then as Representative before his promotion to District Inspector and finally to Regional Auditor. He retired in 1988. Following his retirement, Seán and his wife, Marion enjoyed an extended visit to Maron's brother, Martin and family in Australia. There was also numerous, memorable family holidays to Galway and Kerry. There were large attendance at the removal from Macken's funeral home on Thursday evening last, at Barntown Church where the funeral cortege was met by a guard of honour from members of the local Fianna Fail cumann and members of the local Comhairle Ceanntair and at the funeral mass on Friday morning last. Local curate, Fr Seán Gorman celebrated the Requiem Mass and spoke fondly of Seán, telling the congregation about his strong spiritual faith which helped to comfort and sustain him during his long illness. Also in attendance were Fr. John Jordan and Fr. Noel Hartley. Seán's grandsons, Colm and Eoin were the altar servers. His grandchildren, Gemma and Gareth recited from Scripture. The prayers of the faithful were read by his granddaughters, Amy and Rebecca and his his nieces Majella Cotter and Lorraine Foley. The Offertory procession was led by his grandchildren, Katie and Gary. His eldest grandchild, Mairead sang beautifully during the Mass, accompanied by organist, Eanna McKenna and her friend, Geraldine Mulhall. The coffin, draped in the tricolour was carried from the church to the adjoining cemetery for burial, by Seán's five sons and close family friend, Gerard Halligan. His son, Seán symbolically released a white dove at the graveside. Seán will be greatly missed. He is survived by loving wife, Marion (nee Whelan); his sons, Liam, Brendan, Eamon, Seamus and Seán; his brother, Seamus; 14 much loved grandchildren; daughters-in-law; sisters-in-law; nephews; nieces; relatives; neighbours and a wide circle of friends.
