January 14, 2005
The Late Andy Halligan The death of Andrew 'Andy' Halligan has caused widespread sadness in Wexford town, where he will be remembered as a devout and well-liked gentleman. The father of Wexford Senior Football team selector Ger Halligan, Andy sadly passed away in Wexford General Hospital after a brief illness. He was 87 years of age. A native of Rathvilly in County Carlow, Andy moved to Wexford over 60 years ago and worked initially as a manager with Godkin's shop on North Main Street. He later went on to open a shop of his own, together with his brother Mick. The brothers operated an old-style grocery business in Westgate, and provided a great service to the people of Selskar over many decades. At one point Andy was also the proprietor of the Westgate Travern. He enjoyed being a publican, and particularly and good conversion with his punters. He also enjoyed music, and participated in the singing pubs in the Westgate until he sold it in 1978. Andy also played his part in the community, and was one of the trustees of the Penny Bank. He was also a man of tremendous faith, and was a Eucharistic Minister in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Rowe Street. He was an affable person and a family man, who was very well liked and will be sadly missed. He is survived by his wife, Mary, sons Ger and Joe (Thailand); brother; Tom; grandchildren, Conor, Aisling, Eoin and Kim; daughters-in-law, Monica and Ubon; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. His remains will leave Wexford General Hospital and will go to Rowe Street Church. Interment will take place in St. Ibar's Cemetery, Crosstown, following Requiem Mass. Andy's brother-in-law, Fr James Dudley, will travel home from Texas to officiate at the funeral. Courtesy of the Wexford People 14th January 2005
