The Late Jim Power
Wexford lost one of its great gaels with the sad passing of Latimerstown man, Jim Power.
Jim who had an ongoing battle with cancer, died surrounded by his family at home in Latimerstown. He was 70 years of age.
Throughout his life Jim had a great affiliation with the St.Martin's GAA club and all who knew him were extremely saddened to learn of his passing.
Jim was a staunch clubman, who gave many years of dedicated service both on and off the field. As a player he won a Minor hurling championship in 1950, and a Junior football championship in 1957. He played with the Wexford Junior football team in 1958.
Jim went on to become a key administrator of the St. Martin's for a long time, and he acted as Secretary from 1964 to 1969 and as a chairman from 1974 to 1980. Jim also represented the club at District and County Board level.
He guided and advised the "next generation" of the club, when the first piece of land was purchased from Johnstown Castle and also in the building of the original pavilion in the 1980s.
Despite his recent illness, Jim still attended games, and also attended games, and also attended the A.G.M. at the beginning of February.
He enjoyed a social drink with his many friends in the club bar where he always had a kind and encouraging word for those involved in the club today. As a mark of respect the Intermediate and Minor football games fixed for last weekend were postponed.
While Jim was born in Latimerstown, he and his wife, Nuala, lived in Wexford town for many years and they had many good friends and neighbours in Tusker View where they were based for over two decades.
They returned to live in Latimerstown in 1980, where Jim fully immersed himself in the local community.
He worked in Johnstown Castle all his life, as a laboratory technician and on retirement became very involved with Piercestown Community Centre, acting as an unpaid FAS supervisor for many years. He was also very involved with the Active Retirement Association and was a former chairman.
In his younger years he took a lot of pleasure out of fishing and was a member of the Saltee Sea Anglers Club. He was also a devoutly religious man, and was active in his local parish.
He is survived by his wife Nuala: children, Janet, Carrie, Gay, Helen and Shea, extended family, relatives and many friends.
His remains were interred in Piercestown Cemetery on Monday following 11 a.m. Requiem Mass in Piercestown Parish Church.
