Body of retired CBS Teacher recovered from Liffey

Sad end to the search for missing Patrick Cremin (75)

The Christmas period brought sad news for the family of retired school teacher Patrick Cremin (75), who's body was recovered from the River Liffey close to O'Connell Bridge at approximately 1 p.m. on December 27.

Patrick had been missing since December 2 when he was last spotted in the Dublin 8 area where he had been receiving medical treatment following throat surgery. Patrick was born in Cork in 1937, but moved to Wexford in the 1960s where he took up a post at the Christian Brothers Secondary School. There he developed a reputation as a fine teacher of Irish, Geography, Religion and Latin.

He lived many happy years in Wexford with his loving wife Philomena at their family home in Clonard and he is also survived by his children Rory and Caroline, as well as grandson Alex, sister Sheila, son-in-law Barry, brother-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives and a large circle of friends. All through his life, Patrick always tried to nurture local talent from around the Wexford area, not only in his role as a teacher but through his many interests. Patrick will be most fondly remembered as an Irish teacher and he had a great love of the language which expanded outside of his work.

He played an active role in the Irish language organisation Conradh na Gaeilge, teaching adults as well as youngsters and doing his best to promote our native tongue. As well as being fluent in Irish, he was a lover of Irish culture and was heavily involved in the local Irish Set Dancing group, participating and travelling all over the country to different events.

Sport was also something that Patrick was passionate about. He played football for the Sarsfields from the time he moved to Wexford until age caught up with him and he had to hang up his boots.

He was also a great lover of rugby and was involved with Wexford Wanderers RFC from the 1960s up until his death in one form or another. He began his association with the club as a player when he first arrived in Wexford and went on to become a mentor and coach, also occupying various roles on the committee including secretary and treasurer. Patrick made a massive contribution to the club in helping to develop their facilities at Park Lane and all of his efforts were recognised when he was made an honorary life member in the mid-90s.

Patrick liked to play an extremely active role in his local community and will be missed by many in the parish of Clonard where he was always happy to lend a hand. He also helped out with the local stroke group and in years gone by was also involved in Wexford Arts Centre.

Patrick's remains will be reposing at his residence in Clonard from 2 p.m. Friday, with removal on Saturday at 11.30 a.m. to the Church of the Annunciation, Clonard for funeral Mass at 12 midday.

Burial will take place afterwards in St. Fintan's Cemetery Taghmon.
