Farrell, Des

The recent death of Mr Des Farrell, 144 The Faythe has caused deep sadness to his family and friends.
Des (83) died unexpectedly at Wexford General Hospital on May 2 after taking ill at home.
He is survived by his sons Dessie, Nicky, Paddy, Peter, Brendan and Aaron; his daughters Annette, Alice, Ellen Marie and Bernadette; 32 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife Breda (nee Dempsey) last year. They were married for 54 years.
A son of the late Paddy and Alice Farrell (nee Whitty) of Bishops Lodge, Summerhill, Des was the last of siblings to pass away.
Born in Park, his family moved to Summerhill when he was six months old.
His father worked as a gardener for four successive Bishops, proudly tending the grounds of the Bishop's Palace in Summerhill.
Des was a cabinet maker by trade and served his time in Hadden's factory in Belvedere Road where he worked for a number of years before obtaining a position with the Crescent Cabinet Company. He eventually set up his own cabinet-making business in The Faythe and ran the operation until he retired.
Des was a life-long GAA supporter who loved travelling to games.
His family have lovely memories of the many occasions he took the clan to Croke Park or Thurles, bringing a picnic along for sustenance.
He was a great friend of the late Billy Rackard and would spend hours chatting to him about sport in his furniture shop on the Main Street.
One of his prized possessions was a signed copy of Billy's book entitled 'No hurling at the Dairy Door' which was brought to the altar during funeral Mass as a symbol of his life.
One of the last excursions he enjoyed before he died was when his daughter Annette brought him in his wheelchair to see the new Nickey Rackard statue in Selskar which he was thrilled about.
A former member of the Loch Garman Silver Band in his youth, Des loved to sing, his party piece being 'The Loveliest Night of the Year' which he and Breda sang on their wedding day.
His funeral Mass was celebrated in Bride Street Church where they were married all those years ago.
Afterwards, he was buried with Breda in St Ibar's Cemetery, Crosstown.
