Well-Known Paddy was a great community worker

The late Paddy Cullen, aged 91, who died in Ely Nursing Home, was a native of Cousinstown, Our Lady's Island and a member of a well-known and highly respected farming family in the district.
Paddy was a great community worker associated with the Pilgrimage Committee, the GAA, Pioneers, local Drama, and also Fianna Fail, for whom he was a staunch supported and committee worker.
He also had a great interest in greyhounds and trained a number of winners. Paddy was a selector with the Island hurling team 1962 Junior champions'. GAA players past and present formed a guard-of-honour beside the hearse on its way to the parish cemetery.
A very large crowd attended the removal of his remains and funeral Mass testifying the esteem in which Paddy and his family are held in.
Glowing tributes were paid to the deceased by Rev. Brendan Nolan, P.P., during Mass. Readings were taken by Jimmy and Ciaran Newport, nephews; Prayers of the Faithful by Kevin Behan, Anne Angle, Christine Bennett, Kellie Newport and Dick Prothero; and gifts were taken to the alter by Kevin and Ciaran Newport. The Island Voices choir sang beautifully during Mass. Caroline Behan, niece, recited a special prayer for Paddy at the end of Mass.
Much sympathy is extended to his brother Kevin, sisters Josephine Thorogood, Mary Worth and Philomena Newport, nieces and nephews and extended family.
Fr. Nolan officiated at the graveside in the parish cemetery as we said farewell to nature's gentleman.
