The Late Tom Doyle
One of the last links with the Leinster championship-winning Wexford football team of 1945 was severed last week as Tom Doyle from Enniscorthy was laid to rest. The former Starlights and Emmets defender died after a brief illness brought an end to a life lived to the full for ninety years.
Tom hailed from the Ross Road in Enniscorthy and he played in the Emmets side that won the county title in 1944, bringing an end to the six-in-a-row bid of the Volunteers. His exploits with the county team included the All-Ireland semi-final the following season when the Leinster champions were defeated 0-5 to 1-4 by Cavan.
Though he was in the army as a young man, he spent much of his life working in England where he earned a good living as a steel erector. Living in the Britain did not appeal to his late wife Kathleen (née O'Brien) but he remained and sent money home regularly to Enniscorthy where the couple's children- Elizabeth, Miriam, Tom and Edward (or Gar) were reared.
Tom Doyle is survived by his daughters Lis (now Moorehouse) of Meadowlands and Miriam of Campile; sons Tom of Ross Road and Gar of Duffry Gate; brother Michael, many relatives and friends. He now lies buried in St. Mary's cemetery beside his wife Kathleen.
May he rest in peace.
