White, Paddy

The late Paddy White Throughout his life the late Paddy White (86) touched many lives and will forever remain in the hearts, minds and memories of those who knew him. Paddy passed away peacefully in his residence at Cassagh on Wednesday July 9. He was a Wexford Town native, born and reared in a Kevin Barry Street to parents Dick and Annie White. Throughout his life he got involved, organised things and saw them through to the end. Paddy set up home with his wife Maud fifty five years ago, initially in their native Wexford Town before moving to the country, firstly to Gusserane and for the last 38 years living in Cassagh. Paddy became an institution with his involvement in the local community including the Rathgarogue/Cushinstown GAA club, Terrerath Community Council and other local community groups. A lifelong GAA supporter, Paddy served in many administrative positions with Gusserane/O'Rahilly's and Rathgarogue/Cushinstown GAA clubs. His transfer from being a townie to country life was a demand of his job. He worked for forty years in the Public Service, firstly with Wexford County Council and then with the South Eastern Health Board. While gardening was in some ways a late vocation, politics was an abiding love and area of interest. He had a particular passion for Fianna Fail. Born on August 30, 1922 during the civil war, Paddy took the Anti-Treaty side at his mothers and fathers knee. De Valera, Lemass and Dr Jim Ryan were all heroes of his and Paddy would still proudly stand with the beliefs and sentiments of the 1916 Proclamation. An organiser of Fianna Fail in Wexford in the 1940s right through to office holding in the local Cassagh Cumann, Paddy's belief was always to be active and involved right up till the end. While the end may have come, he has left behind a family of which he was proud but more importantly a family who are proud of him. Paddy is deeply regretted by his loving wife Maud, his seven surviving children Bernadette (Ryan), Brian, Paul, Dick, Maud (O'Dwyer), Ann Marie (Burke) and Shay, his sister Carmel, grandchildren, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews, relatives and friends. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam dilis. - Wexford People, August 6th 2008
