Byrne, Michael 'Miko'

Many people were saddened by the death of Michael(Miko)Byrne of 9, Manix Place who passed away on July 12.
Michael (74) died in Waterford General Hospital following a long illness which he bore with great strength, dignity and fortitude.
He is survived by his loving wife, Rosaleen (nee O'Flaherty); his son, Anthony; his daughters, Mary and Caitriona; son-in-law, Martin; daughters-in-law, Siobhan; grandchildren, Shaun and Lauren; his sisters, Kathleen Fahy and Anna Lahill; his nephews nieces, extended family and many friends.
Michael,who was affectionately known to his colleagues as Miko, spent most of his working life with springs Ltd. He joined the company in 1949 and remained until its closure in 1984.
When the business was transferred to Pierce Engineering Ltd later that year, Michael took employment with them and stayed with the firm until his retirement in 1998. He gave loyal service to both companies.
Michael took an early interest in trade union affairs. He joined the Amalgamated Engineering Union and was a member for 59 years.
His contribution to his union both as a member and official was appreciated by all his colleagues.The high esteem in which he was held, was reflected by the large number of former colleagues who attended his funeral.
During his retirement, Michael and his wife, Rosaleen enjoyed spending time and travelling together. Among the locations they visited were London, Paris, Rome, New York, Philadelphia, Washington and Lourdes. Having originally met through ballroom dancing the couple continued to enjoy dancing together down through the years. They were married in August 1965. Michael had a great passion for gardening and spent many hours tending to his flowers, especially his roses and apple trees. Many of his neighbours enjoyed the fruits of his labours.
He also enjoyed many an afternoon in the garden with his neighbours, chatting and discussing the good old days.
Michael was a man of very strong faith. He had a great devotion to St Padre Pio who he attributed to his marvellous recovery following by-pass surgery 20 years ago.
He had a great love of all sports and was a member of Sarsfields GAA Club where he is in the Souvenir Hall of Fame Album for the Junior Football Championship win in 1953. He always kept a keen interest in the progress of the club.
Michael received excellent care from Wexford General hospital and Waterford Regional Hospital, in particular from the excellent staff of the Dialysis Unit and Medical Ward 2.
His family would like to thank Dr.Anne Marie O'Brien of Abbey Street surgery and Wexford Hospice Homecare, especially Nurse Kathryn Flood.
Michael was laid to rest in St.Ibar's Cemetery, Croostown following his funeral mass Rowe Street Church. His Month' Mind Mass will be celebrated in Rowe Street Church on August 17 at 10 a.m.
