Wexford hurling manager Davy Fitzgerald admits he's "devastated" by the leg injury sustained by Diarmuid O'Keeffe.

The St Anne’s dual star is on crutches after sustaining a very nasty dead leg during a club game earlier this month and is in a race against time to be fit for the Model County’s Leinster SHC opener against Dublin at Parnell Park on May 19th.

In further headaches for Fitzgerald, Liam Og McGovern picked up a hamstring injury playing club football over the weekend, while James Breen is recovering from knee surgery.

“The injury to Dee is quite serious. We cannot put a timeframe on it but it leaves me devastated,” the Clare man told The Irish Daily Star.

“He was playing quality hurling, had returned to top form, while the amount of ground he covers is phenomenal.

"It’s the type of injury that is difficult to assess. We’ve been told four to six weeks but that would leave him very little time for preparation – that’s how serious it is.”
