Senior Football Championship: We headed to Cusack Park full of hope last Saturday evening for our first round game in the Westmeath SFC. Unfortunately as the game went on our hope very much started to fade. It was a tightly contested game. From playing Kinnegad a couple of weeks back in the league, they proved to be ultra defensive, and they applied the same tactic again last Sunday. Unfortunately we didn't seem to have any plan to try and counteract this, and we struggled to break down a well organised and well marshalled Kinnegad defence. The game started at a slow pace, we got our first score with a great point from play from Dude McCormack off his left foot. Kinnegad replied with there own point from play as well as two poor frees given away by the defence which Kinnegad converted. A great flowing move down the field involving Davey Tone, and Deccie Mullen resulted in a fisted goal by Darragh Healy who made a great run forward from wing back. A decent first half performance by the lads ended with both sides level going into the half time break 1.04 to Kinnegad's 7 points. The second half started very much like the first, Kinnegad conceding most kick outs, and defending in numbers. Padraig Nestor was pushing forward at every chance, he found himself with a shooting opportunity out near the side line of the left hand side and kicked a fantastic point off his right foot. Unfortunately for us, the scoring in the second half started and ended there. A number of poor shooting chances came and went, as the game slowly slipped away from us. The game ended with Kinnegad winning on a score line of 0.12 to 1.05. The expression on the lads faces after the game very much said it all . We now need move on to our next game, which is this weekend vs The Downs and learn from this game as all is not lost. We have a very good group of honest players and we have no doubt they will turn things around. Team: Eoin Carberry, Damien Carroll, Andy McCormack, Padraig Nestor, Darragh Healy, Enda Boland, Boidu Sayeh, David 'DD' McCormack, Israel IIunga, Shane Tone, TJ Fox, David 'Dude' McCormack, Davey Tone, Deccie Mullen, Plunkett Maxwell. Subs used: Darren King, Dan Digan, Cormac Palmer. We would like to wish Israel a speeding recovery after picking up a shoulder injury.
Junior Football Championship: We played Garrycastle at home last Thursday evening in the park, in the opening round of the JFC. Due to a numbers of injuries on the senior panel we had to go without a number of senior players and we struggled to compete. Garrycastle were in control from start to finish, and went on to win 5.15 to 0.07. Team: Darren O'Connell, Robbie Healy, Stephen Darcy, Ger Longworth, Cormac Palmer, Paddy Keenan, Lorcan Daly, Padraig Fox, Daniel Boland, Colin Boland, Richie O'Brien, Daniel Digan, Michael Killian, James Geoghegan, David Fox.
