Westmeath manager Jack Cooney is looking forward to the start of the competitive action this weekend as his charges face Wexford in the O’Byrne Cup.

The Lake County make the long journey to Enniscorthy for the game on Saturday where Cooney is expected to give a number of new faces the chance to impress.

And Cooney told the Westmeath Independent that playing games is always better than training as they look ahead to the FL2 campaign.

“At this time of the year, it’s all about bringing in fresh faces and getting the right balance in the squad,” stated Cooney.

“We are really looking forward to getting going. We invited in a lot of up and coming players and we are encouraged by the level of commitment and effort they are putting in at training.

“I don’t want to single out any players at this stage because we have a huge panel of players in at the minute.”
