Junior B Championship Final

Crookedwood 0-15 Cullion 0-14. We won our first Junior B championship in a number of years after a hard fought, narrow victory over parish rivals Cullion. Our opponents were going for three in a row and came very close to pulling it off in game that could’ve went either way, but thankfully in the end, luck was on our side. With less than a minute on the clock, the lively Adam Bate opened match scoring before Brendan McCarthy and Conor Regan took turns in hitting two frees each. Ian McGovern shot a great point from play only for Regan to match that score with another free, all these scores coming inside the opening eight minutes. It took fourteen minutes for the next score to come, a massive long range free from Adam Mitchell, but it seemed every score was the catalyst for our opponents to reply in kind. Thanks to a pointed free from Brendan and a nice score from play courtesy of Noel Yourell we opened up a three-point lead by the 19th minute, but Cullion hit back with two quick points to narrow the gap. We went three ahead once more, this time Brendan from play and Noel from a free but Cullion struck back with another two. Brendan and Regan traded points to leave us ahead at the break, 0-10 to 0-8 after an entertaining half of hurling. Cullion came out flying for the second half and scored four points in a row to take the lead. It took a point apiece from Noel Yourell and a second monster free from goalie Adam Mitchell to steady the ship and level the game. A point from play put Cullion ahead briefly before Brendan put us back in front with a pointed free and one from play on the 22nd minute. Cullion drew level two minutes later but as both teams understandably tired after a frenetic fifty-five minutes, scores became scarce. The games first goal chance came with five minutes to go for Cullion, thankfully for us the attempt on goal fizzed inches wide. With thirty minutes on the clock we had a goal chance ourselves, Adam Bates powerful shot was deflected out for a 65’. From the aforementioned 65’ Brendan stepped up and held his nerve to guide the ball over the bar, one up in injury time. As time ticked on Cullion put on the pressure looking for the score that would send the tie to extra-time but we held out for a brilliant win. After the game, Crookedwood man James Savage presented the cup to delighted captain Adam Mitchell. The fact that we only had a panel of seventeen players for the final, coupled with the lack of training since September shows how well the lads performed on the day. Well done to all.
