Clarke’s Bar Junior Championship:

St. Loman's Mullingar 1-04     The Downs 3-10

A totally out-of-sort St. Loman's experienced their first defeat of this year’s Junior championship last Monday evening in Lakepoint Park, a result which meant that The Downs now advance to the quarter finals.

Loman's endured a nightmare first half, conceding 1-1 with only 3 minutes on the clock, missed several open-goal opportunities, a missed penalty and numerous wides. The best the Blues could muster were 3 pointed frees from Garrett Hickey, leaving the half time score reading The Downs 1-06 to St. Loman's 0-03.

St. Loman's began the 2nd half brightly when Dan Sheridan popped up with a great point from play to reduce the gap to 5 points, astonishingly this was to be the Blues only score from play throughout the entire game. Disaster struck for Loman’s when they had a player sent off shortly afterwards, the Downs utilised their extra man to great effect and reeled off 2 more points to make it a 7-point game. With 12 minutes to go, Loman’s were thrown a lifeline to reduce the gap to 4 points when they successfully converted a penalty kick, however moments later Loman’s had another player sent off, allowing the opposition to open the flood gates and rattle off 2-2 in the dying moments, finishing the game off as a contest.

It’s back to the drawing board for the Blues for next year, however with so many young players making the breakthrough to adult football this year, the future is bright. Lomans would like to thank their backroom team of Adrian Charles, Declan Cox, Richie Cleary, Gary Devine, Aidan Davitt & Mark Scally.

Although the scoreboard flattered our opponents, they were nonetheless the better side on the night and we wish them all the best in their next game.
