Southern Gaels Club Notes

August 19, 2019

U10 vs Cullion, Tue 13th August

Southern Gaels travelled to Mullingar to play Cullion in a challenge game and it was great to kick off the cob webs of the summer vacation period. Cullion started the game at a ferocious pace getting a few early scores but slowly the Gaels got into the game. Our goal keeper Padraig O’Neill made some fine saves assisted by the full back line of Tom O’Keeffe, Oisin Donoghue, Cian Cahill and Daniel Crosbie. Dara Geary, Ódhran Mitchell and Eoghan Joyce gained a foothold in midfield and provided good ball into the forward line of Cillian Lee, Brian Elliot, Shane Cahill and Daniel Fogarty. The Cullion goalkeeper was man of the match stopping shot after shot. Cullion ran out winners on the night but we look forward to the return match in Athlone. Thanks to all the parents for travelling to Mullingar and to Cullion for hosting the match.

U14: Southern Gaels 2-19 v 3-8 Clann na Gael

This marked the team’s first points in the Division 1 championship and they were well earned. Any team that can score 21 times in 60 minutes is doing something right and must have many of the forwards on target and on song. The gaels opened with the first few scores, but Clann fought back with an early goal. However, that scared the home side and playing with the wind upped their tempo, took full advantage of the conditions and took a lead of 1-12 to 1-5 at the break. However playing into the breeze was going to be a different challenge and the visitors were going not going to lie down after travelling an hour from Castlepollard and Brownstown. The opposition battled with all they had trying to curtail the gaels, but we were still able to outscore them in the second half, 1-7 to 2-3 to capture valuable championship points, which are needed to qualify for a semi-final, which would be a marvellous achievement, haven been promoted from division 2.

Under 13 Development Squad

Tommy Gallagher has been appointed as a new GDA in Westmeath and we wish him the very best in his new role. One of his first high profile tasks is to run the Selection/Trial Sessions for the U13s on : 24th August & 7th September, followed by Training Sessions: 21st September & 5th October with an inter county Blitz Day on 19th October. All clubs must send in 7/10 players that are eligible to play born in 2006 and we surely will have plenty of talent to attend.

Annabels Allstars fundraiser and 7-A-Side Hurling Tournament in memory of Annabel Loughlin from Clonkill was successfully held last Saturday. Our Adult team accounted themselves very well at this novel format and had great craic benefitting from an extremely well run tournament, with Pink certainly being the colour of the tournament, with Pink Sliotars, Flags and Jerseys all over Clonkill. The highlight had to be the arrival of King Henry Shefflin, who posed for photos and presented all the awards of the day. He gave very generously of his time and a few gaels bagged some memorable photos and signatures off the Legend of the game. There was some great fundraising also with all funds going to Temple Street Children’s Hospital and Mullingar Pediatric Unit.
