'It's massive for Westmeath to be playing in Croke Park'

Westmeath players and management celebrate after the Allianz HL Division 2A final victory over Kerry at Cusack Park, Ennis.

Westmeath manager Joe Quaid has urged his players to make amends for last year’s disappointment in the Joe McDonagh Cup final.

The Lake County have the chance to make amends when they take on Laois in the final at Croke Park on Sunday week.

Last year, they lost to Carlow in the decider and Quaid feels that they deserve to be back in the final next week.

“It’s massive for Westmeath to be playing in this final in Croke Park. It’s massive for any county to play in Croke Park. This will be my fourth time there as a manager. I’ve won two and lost one,” Quaid told the Westmeath Independent.

“I’ve lost twice there as a player. It’s a fantastic arena when you win. It’s what every child wants to achieve when he is growing up, where every child wants to play and we’re there now at the final hurdle.”
