Great Day at Westmeath Reunion Match

Saturday 15th June 2019 will live long in the minds of all who attended the reunion game between the Westmeath All Ireland Winning teams of 1995 and 1999 at the Horseleap streamstown Community field. Blessed by good , though not glorious weather, the event which was mooted by a number of committee members some months ago was well attended with over 400 people enjoying the occasion. An Under 10 exhibition game between St Josephs and St lomans Mullingar opened proceedings just after 2pm and St Josephs Under 14 team received a fine reception prior to the main game having won a county league title earlier in the day. The main game got underway just after 3-20pm with Westmeath Minor team playing in the county green away strip and the Under 21 team in the traditional Maroon and white colours. Referee for the day was Barry Kelly who handled what was a fun occasion very well and there were scores aplenty as the Under 21’s ran out winners though no one really knows what the score was nor does anyone really care! It was a fun occasion and one where it was great to see a number of the household names of Westmeath football for the past two decades in action again. The pace may have dropped and the fitness levels certainly were not of days of old but class is permanent and many of the game plays and scores were top class. Our thanks to the 30 players who were able to come on the day and to the selectors who gave their time to direct those two great teams at the time. Mile buoichas doibh go leir.

Under 14’s claim league crown:

St Josephs Under 14 Boys continued with their great run of form with a hard earned victory over a good Multyfarnham side at TEG Cusack Park on Saturday 15th June to claim the Division 3 League title. Winning by 2-12 to 1-10 at the finish, this was a great game of football that could have went either direction. Multyfarnham had the better of most of the first half and led by 0-6 to 0-3 before St Josephs hit back with a goal to level matters. We were the more clinical side in the second half and though our opponents were always in the hunt, St Josephs on the balance of play deserved to win in the end. With two weeks to go to the National Feile finals in Mayo and Sligo, this game was ideal preparation and will stand the team well for the national finals.
