Division 3 v Mullingar Shamrocks

Our All-County League Division 3 status is assured for another year, despite us slipping to a fifth straight defeat at home to Mullingar Shamrocks on a 0-9 to 0-10 scoreline last Friday evening.

Since starting the campaign with three successive wins, we have suffered a slump in form which briefly put us at risk of relegation before Moate All-Whites’ win over Garrycastle on Sunday afternoon confirmed our safety with one round still to play against St Malachy’s.

Despite the return of the Fennell twins who both saw action, this was another below-par performance with six of our nine points coming from Nigel Scally frees. Dean Fitzgerald opened the scoring with a fine effort from play and David Fennell also raised white flags in either half, but we failed to make our possession count with Conor Delaney missing the game's only real goal-scoring chance midway through the second half.

The visitors led by 0-8 to 0-6 at half-time and despite only managing two further points in the second half, held on for what was only their second win of the campaign.

Team: Thomas Barrett; Darragh Coffey, James Fox, Aidan Stone; James Hanlon, Shaun Pidgeon, Colin Draper; Dean Fitzgerald, Nigel Scally; Mel Kiernan, Conor Delaney, Keith Corcoran; Brendan McManon, David Fennell, Kevin Smith. Subs: Yuri Tierney, Michael Baker, Ryan Coughlan, Diarmuid Egan, Paul Fennell, Cathal Finn and Dylan Maloney.

Ladies v Ballycomoyle

Our ladies footballers made it two wins from two in the intermediate championship in Ballycomoyle on Sunday when they easily accounted for the home side.

Despite only travelling with 16 players – that was reduced to 15 after Gillian Heeney was injured in the warm-up – due to work commitments and exams, we ran out facile winners. Former county star Triona Durkan made a welcome return from a long injury layoff, while championship debutant Katie Coffey didn’t put a foot wrong at wing back.

The result leaves us top of the table on score difference with three tough group games to come against Coralstown/Kinnegad, Mullingar Shamrocks and Clann Gaels.

Team: Sabrina Jackson; Triona Durkan, Eimear Fox, Orla Daly; Leah Farrell, Sandra Garvin, Katie Coffey; Aoibhinn Jackson, Ayesha Roche; Niamh Durkan, Mairead McCormack, Aine Pettit; Fiona Dixon, Kim Cobbe, Orla Brennan. Sub: Gillian Heeney.

Underage

Due to a clash with our minor Division 3 game against St Michael's, which throws in at 7.30pm in St James’ Park, Thursday evening's U10 Go Games blitz has been moved to the Mercy Secondary School pitch. Training for U6s and U8s will take place as normal at 6.15pm on the evening.

The late Frank Keoghan

We extend our deepest sympathy to the Keoghan family, Tullamore Road on the death of Frank after an illness last week.

A brilliant musician and a former Kilbeggan footballer, Frank was one of the town's best-known and loved characters. A minute’s silence was observed as a mark of respect before last Friday’s All-County League Division 3 game against Mullingar Shamrocks.

May he rest in peace.

Emmet Dalton

At last week’s monthly committee meeting, Emmet Dalton was granted a transfer to Cappincur pending approval by Offaly GAA.

One of the most talented players the club has produced in the last 20 years and part of a great GAA family, Emmet won an IFC medal when we defeated Ballymore in 2000 and came off the bench to give a man of the match performance in our 2012 JFC final victory over Mullingar Shamrocks. We thank him for his many years of service to Kilbeggan and wish him well in the future.
