Mullingar Shamrocks GAA Notes

May 18, 2019

The night of the long lines ...

It was the night of the long lines in the Greville Arms Hotel on Friday night as people waited for the opportunity  to audition for what director Shane Barkey stated will be an 'absolutely a massive project', the Mullingar Shamrocks show The Sound of the Musicals scheduled for the Mullingar Park Hotel on Saturday 28 September at 7.30 pm.

This is the first time such as show will be staged in Mullingar and will feature seven high quality abridged twelve minute versions of well known musicals. This will be an all-singing, all-dancing live performance show combining elements of Strictly Come Dancing, The Oscars and the X-Factor.  It will be a big budget show with high production values under the control of director Shane Berkey. Greg Bentick is the musical director and Siobhan Moore is in charge of the choreography.

And if Broadway can have its Tony Awards then Mullingar Shamrocks can have its Phony Awards and the third part of the show will feature the awards for the highest grossing musical, the best musical, the best male and female performers in a leading role, best costumes etc.

Rehearsals will commence in August and will continue twice weekly over a seven week period. The identity of the seven musicals will be revealed on our Grand Launch night scheduled for the end of June.

Final Audition Date Announced ...

The final audition and last chance to be part of something special takes place on Thursday next 23 May in the Greville Arms Hotel at 7.30 pm ... Still plenty of places up for grabs but next Thursday is D Day ...

Bunbrosna's  two point winning margin earns two league points ...

Division 6 team suffered a 2 point defeat at home to a strong Bunbrosna team on Sunday morning in Springfield on what was a lovely morning for football.

The game was played 13-a -side to facilitate our visitors - the extra space did not suit our fitness levels. Bunbrosna led from start to finish and although Shamrocks battled hard to the end and never gave up the scoreline could have been much worse only for at least 5 brilliant saves from goalkeeper Killian White. Another  highlight was a terrific run from defence by Ryan Blundell that ended with a foul on Ryan that yielded a penalty. Ryan earned the penalty and volunteered to take the kick himself and struck a fine shot sending the goalkeeper the wrong way. In these days goalkeepers learn to make themselves big and on this occasion the Bunbrosna keeper deflected the shot with his foot in the manner of David  de Gea.

Unfortunately, for the goalkeeper the rebound fell into the arms of Ryan who duly despatched the ball to the net.

The panel was short a number of players due to communion ceremonies on in Mullingar. Cian Fox, a minor this year, made his adult debut and did well.

Mullingar Shamrocks: Killian White, Cian Fox, Brian Reidy, Stephen Hassett, James Grogan, Kenneath O'Reilly Gary Corroon, Mark Eivers, Oisin Dolan, Peter Collins, Gary Walsh, Shane Colleary, Peter Collins. Subs (all used): Cormac Hynes, Brian McGuire, Ryan Blundell, Paul Christie, Eamonn Breslin.

Under-14 Football League Athlone 5-19 Mullingar Shamrocks 4-10

With a combined total of 9-29 clocked up on the scoreboard this was a most enjoyable game of football played in Springfield on Thursday evening. Despite falling behind in the early stages and trailing by 1-3 to 0-0 after ten minutes Mullingar Shamrocks  recovered well and had reduced the deficit to the minimum (3-5 to 2-9) at the interval thanks to the goal scoring ability of Ryan Kelly and Alex Sheerin. Athlone dominated the second half and outscored Shamrocks 3-10 to 1-5.

The loss of Killian Kelly early in the game to a black card was costly but overall it was a good display by the Shamrocks lads highlighted by Ryan Kelly's hat trick of goals. Was he allowed keep the match ball?

Mullingar Shamrocks:  Eoin Doran, Adam Glynn, Killian Kelly, Peter Finch; Tadhg Sheridan, Dylan Carey, Donncha Maguire; William O’ Reilly, Matt Ryan; Matthew Shaw, Calum  Rigney, John Ryan; Alex Sheerin, Ryan Kelly, Gavin Pierce.  Shane Ormsby, Gary Brannigan, Hugh O'Sullivan Sexton, John Shaw, Luke McCabe, Shane Egan,  Frankie Tucker, Nathan Cornally.

Under-16 LGF: Garrycastle were too strong ...

Due to the absence of 5 players we had some girls playing out of position but It was certainly a case of déjà vu as the game that unfolded was exactly as the two previous rounds.

Shamrocks replied to an early point with a well worked and superbly taken goal. Unfortunately our opponents took control and we were no match for their off the ball runs and ability to score from long range. After the break heads were lifted for the second half but we left ourselves far too much to do but never stopped working. To perform to the best of your ability you have to get the basics right and the girls will be working hard on those elements in the next few weeks to show that their results haven't been reflective of their work rate and ability.

Mullingar Shamrocks: Chloe Flood McCormack, Sinead Battle, Áine McKenna, Elyse Byrne, Aoibheann Regan, Robin Wrafter,  Máiread Newman (Captain), Niamh Raeside, Anne Marie O'Reilly, Mia Gilligan Jasmine Haugh, Molly Byrne, Eve Hynes, Leah Glynn, Megan Reid, Kayla McNally, Abby Smith.
