O'Connor targets Westmeath win

Kerry hurlers pause for the National Anthem before their Leinster SHC clash with Meath at Pairc Tailteann.

Kerry manager Fintan O’Connor admits that their clash against Westmeath in the Joe McDonagh Cup on Saturday week takes on extra significance following their opening round defeat to Antrim.

The Kingdom were soundly beaten by Antrim in Dunloy to put them on the backfoot in the championship early on.

They now have a two-week break before facing Westmeath and O’Connor told the Kerryman that it is a must win game for them.

“Yeah that’s the way it is,” said O’Connor. “In fairness Westmeath were deserving winners that day (league final) so like we knew if you lose the first game, the second game becomes even bigger.

“If you win the first game you’re thinking if you win the second game you’re nearly on your way. Going up to Westmeath is not going to be easy.”
