Garrycastle club notes

Tearz in your Eyes

A really great night’s entertainment was put on last Saturday night in the Radisson by the young and old, male and female people of the club. It was a variety show that had everything - singers, dancers, comedy sketches  with fun and laughter -  all local and all amateurs, some never having been on a stage before. The winner was Hurling Holly (aka Aileen Holly) who gave a wonderful rendition of the very funny  “The day I scored the winning goal”.  Club chairman, Michael Mannion, thanked the comperes – Stephen Naughton  and Denise Dolan, organising committee Noel Gardner (chairman), Denise Dolan, Emer Gaffey,  Sinead Shine,  Dearbhla Ganly, Philly Fuery,  Sinead Denby, Emma Keyes, Emma, Daly,  Terry Dillon. He thanked the judges for their helpful and incisive comments delivered in a fun way – Ray Collins, Regina  Bushell and Pete Casey.  He thanked and made a presentation to Niamh Donohoe who put the whole show together as well as being the choreographer and without whom this show could not have happened.  He also thanked the Radisson and all the sponsors and asked the audience to support them.

ACFL Div 1

GARRYCASTLE 3-19 CORALSTOWN-KINNEGAD 1-10

Garrycastle had a comprehensive victory against Coralstown-Kinnegad in ACL Division 1 on Friday night last in the AIT. This was an impressive performance and result and continued from the improved performance in Division 1 evident in their previous match. There were 4 changes from that game away to the Downs including the first appearance in 2019 of James Dolan from the Allianz NFL Division 3 title winning Westmeath team. The visitors were first off the blocks and had 3 points on the board after 5 minutes before an Alex Gardiner converted free provided Garrycastle’s first score of the night. The teams then traded points and in a 10 minute spell, Garrycastle notched up 1-4 without reply. The goal was a well worked move from the two midfielders which was palmed to the net by Mickey Greene. A point on 22 minutes from the visitors interrupted this run of scores until a second goal, this time from Gardiner and another sequences of points from the home team brought their half time tally to 2-9 with Coralstown-Kinnegad finishing the half on 0-6.

Michael Monaghan opened the scoring for Garrycastle in the second half with a brace of points. This was followed by a score from James Sheerin before the visitors mounted a challenge on the Garrycastle goal which was denied by a spectacular intervention by James Dolan to put the ball out for a 45. After this, the home team started to empty the bench and continued to add to their score tally and run out winners by a margin of 15 points. With 10 players contributing scores including 3 subs this was a very good all round team performance and shows the level that this team are capable of with the appropriate work rate, attitude and team work.

Under-12 League vs. Tubberclair, April 3rd

The Under-12 team made the short journey to Tubberclair last week for their first outing in this years league campaign.
The Garrycastle team started brightly in the opening few minutes, going four points ahead in difficult windy conditions. Tubberclair then upped their tempo and clawed back two good points. There was some excellent football on show from both sides, but a strong performance all over the field, saw Garrycastle lead going into the break on a scoreline of Garycastle 2-08 to 1-02 for the home side.
There were a few tactical changes made at halftime and it seemed to give us the impetus as we got a brace of points from Darragh Glennon in the opening few minutes. This was the signal to the Garrycastle lads to pile on the pressure with scores coming from Andrew Henson, James McHugh, Aaron Keegan and Louie Shine.  The final scoreline saw a convincing Garrycastle win, Garrycastle 6-13, Tubberclair 1-02.  Overall, a great all round team performance.
Team:  Darragh McCormack, Dylan Frawley, Darragh Glennon, Cian Norris, Oisin O'Donoghue, Rian Gaynor, Niadh Shine, James McHugh, Jack Dolan, Oisin Mulvihill, Van McCay, Aaron Keegan, Andrew Henson, Kealan McNamara, Louie Shine.
