Westmeath manager Jack Cooney has stressed that they cannot afford to drop anymore points in the NFL 3 campaign.

Last Saturday night’s defeat to Down came on the back of a draw against Carlow the week before, and Westmeath now sit two points off the bottom of the division.

However, they are only two points off the top as well, so the outcome of their league campaign could well be determined by their next game against Laois at TEG Cusack Park.

Cooney admitted to the Westmeath Independent that there can be no more room for error in their remaining fixtures.

“We’ve dropped three league points and every game now takes on extra value,” stated Cooney. “We’ll give the lads a few days off and refocus then. It’s been a long stretch for them and we’ll allow them recover. Nothing changes and we’ll focus on the Laois game. We’re looking forward to it to be honest.

“We’re together 14 weeks or so now, with lads working in the gym and so on. That doesn’t all come to a stop just because we lost up in Newry. There is no doubt that we will learn from it. We just didn’t close out the game when we were in a very strong position. We’ll be far better for that experience for the rest of the league.”
