Congratulations Killian

We send our congratulations to Killian Daly on his captaining Westmeath to victory in the O'Byrne Cup final against Dublin. Similar sentiments to all those associated with the superb victory.

Back in the good old days of 1986 and 1987, Kevin Daly and Peter Smith were key defenders on the Mullingar Shamrocks senior football teams that won the Flanagan Cup. They even sat together for the 1987 team photo. On last Friday night in Croke Park their sons Killian and Stephen were in direct opposition with Stephen Smith playing at corner forward for Dublin and Killian Daly in the corner back position and captain of Westmeath. Peter Smith won county senior medals with Mullingar Shamrocks in 1986, '87, '90 (capt), '92, '93 and '94. Kevin Daly won senior medals in 1986, '87 and was back from the USA in 1994 to win another title.

It's hard to believe its 31 years since Westmeath won this trophy and on this occasion Westmeath also had a Mullingar Shamrocks player as captain, a youthful Tom Ormsby. Having a Mullingar Shamrocks player as captain is obviously a help to teams planning an assault on this early season prize; in 2012 when DCU won the title, the team captain was Kieran Gavin with his brother David also a medallist on that occasion.

Sport Your Mind

As part of our Healthy Club Status, which is been actively promoted on an ongoing basis by our Healthy Club Officer, Joan Ormsby, we will be holding a Seminar entitled Sport your Mind in the Belvedere Suite, Greville Arms Hotel, Mullingar on Tuesday, January 29 from 7.30pm to 8.30pm for all coaches involved at under-age level. Sport your Mind is a mental health Awareness initiative for community active sports organisations.  This initiative helps raise people’s awareness of youth mental health issues and provides information to coaches, parents and young people on the supports that are available within the community.
