Clonkill Hurling club notes

December 14, 2018

Condolences

Clonkill Hurling Club extends its deepest sympathy to the following families on their recent bereavements:

The Morgan Family Collinstown on the death of Brendan Morgan.

The Doherty Family, Delvin on the death of Carmel Doherty

Annabel

Everyone in our community was deeply shocked on 2nd of November last when the news emerged of young Annabel Loughlin’s untimely passing.

Annabel, only 3 years old, was a loving daughter of Enda and Eileen Loughlin, and a devoted sister to Senan and TJ.

Anyone who attended a Clonkill event, whether it was training, a challenge or championship match, quickly became familiar with Annabel - she always had her Hurley in one hand, while hanging out of Daddy’s leg with the other.

Although Annabel was an only girl, her parents always affirmed that she was well able to hold her own and when they spoke about her, it was always with such pride and love.

Enda and his family have been stalwarts of Clonkill Hurling Club for many years. Indeed, Enda had captained the Clonkill Intermediate Team to the Final this year, and the replay of this match was played on Bank Holiday Monday, 29th October.

Eileen, Senan, TJ and Annabel were all in attendance that day to support Enda, who, once again, was wearing the green and gold with pride.

Annabel was one of  first over to Enda after his disappointment of losing the final. Everyone could see she had her Daddy wrapped around her little finger, as she kissed him and he broke out in smile.

Following her tragic passing, Annabel’s removal was held on Monday evening 5th of November 2018 and hundreds of people attended the family home to offer condolences to the family.

Annabel’s funeral mass was in Delvin the following day and burial was to Taughmon Cemetery.

To Annabel’s Parents Eileen & Enda, her brothers Senan and TJ, her  Grandparents, Peter and Pat Loughlin and Eilish and Willie O’Driscoll, and the extended Family of young Annabel Loughlin we extend our sincere condolences at this difficult time. Annabel will be fondly remembered by everyone in Clonkill Hurling Club.

Under 21 Hurling Final

Clonkill qualified for the Under 21 Final after defeating Castletown Geoghegan and Fr Daltons.

The final was fixed for the 8th of December in TEG Cusack Park.

Clonkill faced a familiar side in the final, Raharney.

1.30pm was the throw in and James McGrath was the man in charge.

Weather conditions were as to be expected for the 8th of December and were a disadvantage to both sides.

It was not a record attendance in TEG Cusack Park, but to the Supporters that did brave the elements this game was not disappointing.

In the first half it seemed to be tit for tat, with maybe Raharney  having a slight upper hand.

Niall Mitchell registered the first score for Clonkill which was a well taken free.

Followed by a well taken point from the very lively Stephen Colgan.

With 20 minutes gone in the match Clonkill trailed by 3 points and all momentum would have appeared to be with Raharney.  At half time Raharney led by 2 points.

A goal was needed in the Clonkill Camp and who better to score it than Jordy Smyth who is quickly becoming the Saint of Goals in Clonkill.

The goal came approximately 1 minute into the resumption of the second half.

Niall Mitchell collected a long delivery and slipped a pass to the advancing Joe Moran, who in turn put the ball across for Jordan Smyth who neatly placed it into the back of the net.

2 further points were added by Mitchell and Colgan after this.

The game remained fiercely competitive with Raharney still fighting for every ball.  Clonkill had to remain focused.

Goal No.2 arrived  mid way through the second half when Niall Mitchell who was on song, caught a high ball turned and struck it in to the back of the Raharney net.

Raharney’s Eoghan Aherne scored Raharney’s only goal on the hour mark and Mitchell added 2 more points after this.

At the final whistle Clonkill had 7 points to spare and were crowned worthy winners for 2018.

Clonkill gave a fine display of hurling on the day,  John Kenny was rock solid in defence who was very well assisted by Liam Moran and Darragh Egerton who just seems to play his game to consistent perfection.

Joe Moran, Stephen Colgan and Jordy Smyth were a constant threat to the Raharney Defence.

Niall Mitchell scored 1-13 for Clonkill on the day, his very presence on the pitch was enough to unnerve the opposition and overall, he was exceptional for Clonkill.

Manager Fergal Fagan was very happy after the match and said that  the 25 lads on the panel put in a great effort all year and he was delighted they got their reward.

Mattie Conaty presented the cup to Niall Mitchell, who was a very deserving Captain

Junior Hurling Final

Best of Luck to the Clonkill Junior Team who play Castletown Geoghegan in the Final in Lakepoint Park (St Lomans) this Saturday the 8th of December @ 1.30pm

Senior Hurling Final

The eagerly awaited final of Clonkill and Raharney was played on the 27th of October which was a Saturday.

Brendan Murtagh played a captain's part as Clonkill won their 15th Westmeath senior hurling title.

There was very little between the teams in the first-half. Brendan Murtagh was reliable as always with his frees.

However, a goal by Conor Raleigh put Raharney 1-3 to 0-3 ahead after 11 minutes.

Six minutes later the sides were on level terms when a fine sideline cut by Luke Loughlin teed up Mark Keegan for a well-taken goal.

At half time Raharney led by the narrowest of margins 1-6 to 1-5 .

Brendan Murtagh scored his eighth point in the 59th minute to put Clonkill four points to the good and the Clonkill supporter could relax.

However, the pressure was back on when Niall Flanagan got a crucial touch to a long delivery from Sean Quinn in the last minute of normal time.

Eoin Price spurned a glorious opportunity to seal the deal for Clonkill.

Clonkill held on to win by a single point.

Clonkill’s Panel - A Mitchell; D Egerton, J Kenny, M McGrath; A McGrath, P Dowdall, L Folan; S Power, B Murtagh; K Reilly, M Keegan, L Loughlin; E Price, A Price, A Dowdall, N Mitchell, C Austin, J Smyth, N Dowdall, & J O'Brien

Ballyboden – First Round of Leinster

“They didn’t win but they gave it everything in a classic encounter and forced extra-time with a remarkable display of character in the circumstances.”

This was one of the Captions from a National paper after the heroic performance by the Clonkill Senior Squad on 6th of November last in Parnell Park.

It was tough night for Clonkill and Brendan Murtagh hit 0-11.

Clonkill opened the game at a  frantic pace to run up a 0-6 to 0-2 lead in the first quarter.

Brendan Murtagh’s point for us, four minutes into stoppage time forced the extra period

Ballyboden 1-9 to 0-10 ahead at half-time, but we were very hopefully and from a Supporters view, things looked promising.

The teams were level five times throughout the second-half in a frantic affair.

Luke Loughlin’s 43rd minute goal after good work along the left end line by Niall Mitchell left it at 1-11 apiece.

Ballyboden continually took the lead in the closing quarter but Clonkill simply refused to throw in the towel and hit back on each occasion.

Niall McMorrow, (Ballyboden), thought he’d hit the winning point in injury-time but Brendan Murtagh’s eighth point of the evening levelled it at 1-17 to 1-17 and forced extra-time.

Niall Mitchell scored a goal near the finish, which created some drama .

But there was to be no fairy-tale ending for us, as Doherty (Ballyboden) struck for second goal in the 82nd minute.

.
